About Eating in Copenhagen: the back story

In the 2026 MICHELIN Guide, Copenhagen has two restaurants with Three Stars, Geranium on the eighth floor of the Parken stadium and Kadeau in Christianshavn, and four with Two Stars: Kong Hans Kælder, Alchemist, Koan and a|o|c. Eleven more hold One Star, from Marchal at Hotel d’Angleterre to the three of Nordhavn. At lunch the city eats smørrebrød, open sandwiches on rye; and in August 2026 Noma came home to Copenhagen after its season in Los Angeles.

Smørrebrød at lunch

Smørrebrød is always built on rye bread, with toppings from herring to raw beef, seafood and egg, as VisitCopenhagen describes it. Schønnemann has served it since 1877; Selma (Bib Gourmand), Sankt Annæ, Aamanns 1921, Restaurant Palægade and Restaurant Møntergade are in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide.

Book the starred tables weeks ahead; for smørrebrød, go at lunch, as Copenhageners do.

Neighbourhood tables

The Bib Gourmands of 2026 are spread across the city: Silberbauers Bistro, Calma and Paesàno on Jægersborggade in Nørrebro; Sanchez, Radio, Enomania and Mêlée in Vesterbro and Frederiksberg; Bobe, Norrlyst, Gabrielle and Uformel in the old town.

New Nordic and Noma

Noma reopened in Copenhagen in August 2026, with a new menu for each month, in its own words; its sister Barr, on Strandgade, is in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide.

Our advice: see our Danish Cuisine article for smørrebrød, herring and the dishes to look for.
