About Roskilde: the back story

Roskilde, a short train ride west of Copenhagen, has the cathedral where Danish kings and queens are buried, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Viking Ship Museum on the fjord, which shows the five Viking ships excavated at Skuldelev and their sailing reconstructions (vikingeskibsmuseet.dk).

Getting there

By DSB train from Copenhagen Central Station to Roskilde; check dsb.dk.

The cathedral

Roskilde Cathedral is the burial church of the Danish monarchs; see roskildedomkirke.dk for opening hours.

DSB’s trains reach Roskilde from Copenhagen Central Station.

The Viking ships

The Viking Ship Museum shows the five Skuldelev ships and their reconstructions, and its boatyard is open to visitors.

Our advice: in summer, take a trip on the fjord in a reconstructed Viking ship, if the museum is sailing.
