About Kronborg and Helsingør: the back story

Kronborg stands at a strategically vital point overlooking the Øresund, the narrow stretch of water between Denmark and Sweden; Christian IV rebuilt the Renaissance castle, which remains largely unchanged, and UNESCO lists it as World Heritage. It is “the Home of Hamlet”, and Holger the Dane sleeps in its casemates (kronborg.dk).

Getting there

By DSB’s regional train from Copenhagen to Helsingør, at the end of the coast line; check dsb.dk.

The castle

Kronborg is closed on Mondays; open Tuesday and Sunday 10:00–16:00 and Wednesday to Saturday 10:00–17:00, with adult tickets at 150 DKK (135 DKK online). Christmas at Kronborg begins on 30 November (kronborg.dk).

Trains run from Copenhagen to Helsingør along the coast; Kronborg is a walk from the station.

Our advice: go down into the casemates to find Holger the Dane.
